What is SASE

Why does it matter?

For decades, enterprise security relied on proxies, NGFWs and SD-WAN, all built around a traditional network perimeter. But as applications moved to the cloud and users moved beyond the office, that model became increasingly inefficient. Traffic was forced back through headquarters, impacting performance while creating new security gaps. The traditional perimeter had effectively disappeared.

SASE brings networking and cloud-delivered security together, moving security from the traditional network perimeter to the cloud edge—wherever users and applications are located.

SASE has two core layers:

  • SD-WAN – intelligently connects and routes organisational traffic.
  • SSE (Security Service Edge) – the cloud-delivered security layer that modernises and replaces legacy proxies and firewalls.

SSE combines four key capabilities:

  • ZTNA – identity-based, least-privilege access without relying on traditional VPNs.
  • SWG – cloud-based web and internet security, replacing legacy proxies.
  • CASB – visibility and control across SaaS and cloud applications.
  • FWaaS – next-generation firewall protection delivered from the cloud.

For Cyberus, SSE represents the security foundation for protecting users, applications and data in a cloud-first, hybrid environment.

The Encyption Problem

As web traffic has evolved from simple HTTP to encrypted, multiplexed protocols such as HTTP/2, HTTP/3 and QUIC, gaining meaningful Layer 7 visibility has become significantly more challenging.

Today, more than 95% of internet traffic is encrypted. Without effective SSL/TLS decryption, security platforms can see the connection-but not what is inside it. Decryption itself introduces complexity around certificates, application compatibility, privacy and performance.

For Cyberus, effective decryption is critical to turning encrypted traffic into actionable security visibility and control.

The New Challenge: AI

Generative AI is creating a new security challenge: Shadow AI. Employees are increasingly using AI tools through personal or unmanaged accounts, creating data exposure that traditional security architectures struggle to detect or control.

SASE provides visibility across user traffic, allowing organisations to identify the AI applications being used, monitor data being shared, and enforce security and DLP policies. Modern platforms can also provide dedicated AI governance controls, including Shadow AI visibility, real-time DLP and data classification to support POPIA compliance.

For Cyberus, combining SASE with effective SSL/TLS decryption is key to giving organisations the visibility and control needed to secure AI adoption.

Network Security Insights

Why South African businesses are moving to SASE.

The rising cost of living in South Africa – from fuel and electricity to food and transport – has made remote and hybrid work an important consideration for both employees and employers. Organisations pushing for a full return to the office risk higher operational costs, reduced flexibility and the potential loss of valuable talent.

But a distributed workforce also introduces new security challenges. Every employee working outside the traditional corporate network creates another point of exposure. Traditional VPNs and legacy security architectures were not designed for today’s permanently hybrid workforce.

Cyberus helps organisations eliminate this trade-off. With SASE and SSE, businesses can provide secure, consistent access whether employees are working from the office, from home or anywhere in between.

POPIA Compliance. South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) places greater responsibility on organisations to protect personal and sensitive information. Cyberus helps organisations strengthen their security and compliance posture through technologies that provide greater visibility, policy enforcement, data protection and activity monitoring. With the right SASE/SSE architecture, security controls can be applied consistently across users, devices, applications and locations.

Hybrid Work Is Here to Stay. The modern workplace no longer has a single location. Employees move between offices, homes, client sites and other remote environments — and they expect the same access and performance wherever they work. Legacy VPNs and proxy-based architectures can introduce latency, complexity and security gaps. Cyberus enables secure, seamless connectivity across the modern hybrid workplace, applying consistent security policies regardless of where users are working.

Ransomware Is a Growing Threat. Cyber threats continue to evolve, with ransomware posing a significant risk to organisations across South Africa and the broader African market. Traditional network security can leave organisations vulnerable to lateral movement once an attacker gains access. Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA) takes a different approach, providing users with access only to the specific applications and resources they need. With Cyberus, Zero Trust principles help limit exposure and reduce the potential impact of a compromised account or device.

A Cloud-First Business Environment. Business applications are increasingly moving away from the traditional corporate data centre. Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, AWS, Azure and other cloud platforms have become fundamental to how modern organisations operate. Security needs to evolve alongside this shift. Cyberus SASE and SSE solutions bring security closer to users, applications and data, helping organisations protect cloud-based environments while delivering a more consistent experience across the business.

Secure Business. Wherever Work Happens. Cyberus helps organisations move beyond traditional network security with a modern approach designed for hybrid work, cloud applications, Zero Trust and evolving cyber threats. One secure framework. Greater visibility. Consistent protection – wherever your people work.

Proven Reliability

Proven at scale. Across South Africa’s most complex networks.

Cyberus goes beyond supplying cybersecurity solutions. We help organisations design, deploy and optimise security environments built for real-world complexity.

Our experience spans demanding business environments where security, connectivity, compliance and business continuity are critical. These environments can involve thousands of users, multiple sites, cloud applications, legacy infrastructure and increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

That practical experience shapes how we approach every engagement. We understand that successful cybersecurity is not simply about implementing technology – it is about designing the right architecture, anticipating challenges and ensuring solutions work effectively within the realities of your business.
